History of Jaipur's Jal Mahal

Jal mahal jaipur

The Jal Mahal, one of Jaipur's most popular tourist attractions, has no written history as to who built it or when. However, it is widely assumed that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built Jal Mahal in 1799 as a hunting lodge for his duck shooting expeditions. Some believe Maharaja Madho Singh I was responsible for the construction of this palace, which dates back to the 1750s. It was never designed to be utilized as an ordinary palace for living, regardless of who built it.

Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber later refurbished the palace in the 18th century. Due to partial seepage of lake water and waterlogging difficulties, the structure has sunk over time. Renovation work was carried out in the early part of the twenty-first century to restore the palace to its former splendor after several years of degradation and neglect. Despite the fact that the palace and many of its elements have been restored, the original terrace garden has been lost. A new terrace garden is being planned, styled after the rooftop garden of Jaipur's famous Amer Palace.

The Architecture of the Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is located in the middle of a 15-foot-deep lake with a 4.9-foot-deep minimum depth. It is a five-story edifice created in the Rajput style of architecture with Mughal architectural influences. While four of the palace's stories are submerged, only the top story is visible, giving the impression that the building is floating on the lake.

Red sandstone was used to build the Jal Mahal. The four corners of the palace are adorned with four magnificent octagonal chhatris. On the roof of the palace is a massive Bengal-style rectangular chhatri. Jal Mahal's terrace garden was formerly adorned with arched passages in its prime.
